Salinas Air Show, October 2-3, 2005 The California International Airshow was a good show this year, especially Sunday which was a clear fog free day. The AirForce Thunderbirds were really thundering along in their F16 planes. Both Saturday and Sunday one of the Navy F18 planes flew by just under the speed of sound making a fog doughnut around its fuselage as it went by. This fog-doughnut was the same diameter as the wings. There was a photo of this on the front page of the California Sunday AM. After the show Sunday, the combined group of Troop 289, Echo Valley 4H and Pack 286 cleaned up the chairs, tables and dividers worked over the runway area in 1 hour, 20 minutes, yet again another record time. Trip Report for Camping and Sailing Service project, April 22-23rd Originally, we had planned on doing a plain dump camping trip this weekend to the quarry, but when we heard that it was the same weekend of the sailing regatta where Jeremy of Surf City Catamarans needed our help, we were glad to change plans and help at the event. We met early Saturday morning, rain provided, and headed strait to Santa Cruz to help with the race. The race was a Hobbie Cat race just next to the Santa Cruz Warf and Boardwalk with some of the best sailors we know of, put on by Surf City Catamarans. Jordan and I helped to guide the traffic of the trailers at the event, while the others helped get the boats off of the trailers and onto the beach. Once our work for the day was done, we went and had some fun on the Boardwalk and Neptune’s Kingdom Arcade. When we were done there, we decided to head to Dennis’ workplace, Olive Spring Quarry, which was nice enough to lets us campout in their private campsite. By the time we had set up camp and put up shelter to stay dry, the days rain conveniently stopped. So, we did some exploring and had some fun in the vicinity. We had a pleasant dinner, sat around the campfire, and headed off to bed. The next morning, we woke up to some more rain. Apparently, Mother Nature decided to take a rest for the night and rain right as we were getting up. After a nice breakfast, we headed to the race where today we would help take the boats off of the beach and to organize the boats and trailers that were departing. After a nice award ceremony, we headed home. Even though there was an abundance of rain this weekend where we stayed, it was a good learning experience and we were proud to help at the race. Very Special thanks to Olive Springs Quarry for providing us with a nice campsite to use, and Surf City Catamarans, especially Jeremy, for their helpfulness of our sailing interests.
Trip Report for Day-hike April 9th, 2005 Area/ Description: Garland Ranch Regional Park and Los Padres Dam A nice introductory hike for the WEBLOS and a good first hike of the year for the troop. We woke up early and met at Burger Kind around 7:00am. Our first and primary destination was to Garland Ranch Regional Park, a new area to the troop and I was the only one familiar with the park. We reached the trailhead about 45 minutes later, and geared up. We decided we would go as far as we felt, and then after some discussion among ourselves in the Venture Crew we decided to do a short walk to the Los Padres Dam up the road. After crossing the bridge over the Carmel River, which was flowing much higher than usual, we headed to the visitor center and restrooms to anticipate any upcoming pressuring business. After some talks about wildflowers and poison oak, we headed up the hill. I was amazed how brilliant the wildflowers were, and how abundant poison oak has become this year. Going up the trail to the Mesa Pond we noticed some major trail maintenance had occurred, special thanks to the group that did this. Also on the way up, we came across the waterfall, which was only trickling down as usual. Once we were up on the Mesa and at the pond, we had a little snack and took in the scenery. After deciding not to go up to the ridge, we headed back down VIA a separate trail, that leaded to a second pond (Fern Pond), stocked with some Golden Coy Fish. We later came across the Rumsen grinding rocks, also called morteros. The rocks were used by the Native Americans to grind up primarily nuts and acorns, and the bowls/ mortars are still embedded into the rocks. We arrived back at the cars at the trailhead shortly after, and headed down the road to the Los Padres Dam trailhead. When we arrived there, the parking area had a huge puddle blocking our usually parking places, but no problem. Also, no sign of the notorious vandals of the parking area. We walked down the dirt road that leads to the dam past the gate. At the bridge that crosses the spillway, we say the water nicely flowing over the edge, one of the few times our troop has seen these conditions at the Los Padres reservoir. We continued up the road to the dam itself, and a nice view of the reservoir and the upper Carmel River valley. We conclusively headed back to the cars, and had a pleasant ride home. This really was a nice day, a nice walk in the park for the venture crew and great learning experience for all. Back at Burger King, we decided to have a Venture Crew only deal afternoon at the movies. We decided to go see Sin City, which had just come out. I’m not a movie reviewer, but I give this movie 2 thumbs up. But, its not the type of movie for those with a weak stomach. Perhaps more Venture crew movie outings after trips can be in store… _________________________________________________________________________________-
